Celebrity Spotting
Delano Hotel
1685 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 672-2000
Before Ian Schrager's Delano Hotel opened in the early '90s, South Beach knew nothing much about boutique hotels. Once the white curtains went up, the hotel scene was transformed and has never been the same since. In addition to the 40-foot sheer white billowing curtains hanging outside, the Delano is best known for its lobby designed by the master of minimalism, Philippe Starck. And while the lobby is definitely a big conversation piece, so is the Delano's backyard pool area, where there are private cabanas, an infinity pool with underwater classical music, restaurant, bar and private beach area. Oh, and a human chessboard, too.
Nothing here is ordinary, from the decor to the crowd, which consists of Hollywood honchos, hipsters and above average Joes who wish to bask in the perfectly lit limelight that is constantly shining on this place. The lobby's Rose Bar is a popular spot to sip zillion dollar martinis and watch the pedestrian traffic flow through the lobby, and the stellar Blue Door is a hot spot for dining. In addition, guests can pamper themselves at the Agua Spa or work out at the David Barton Gym. The rooms at the Delano are white and sparse but well-appointed, plus you have the privilege of sleeping in one of the world's hottest and hautest hotels.
B.E.D.
929 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 532-9070
This trendy South Beach eatery certainly makes for amusing conversation, to say the least. "Will you go to B.E.D. with me tonight?" is just one of many ways of saying it, but the bottom line here is that Beverage, Entertainment, Dining is an extravagant concept that transforms an eclectic menu into anything but a tired, sleepy epicurean experience. It's okay to eat in bed here -- in fact; it's the only way, with mosquito-netted beds substituting for tables. Ladies, just make sure that if you wear skirts, wear long ones, as there's no where to daintily cross your legs. And worry not about getting crumbs in these beds, knowing that you won't have to change the sheets, but don't be surprised if you discover crumbs that aren't your own.
Gimmick aside, B.E.D. has fantastic food, such as macadamia nut-crusted swordfish with black bean daikon sprout salad and peanut sauce. And despite their cheesy names, desserts are absolutely sinful. Try the Menage a Trois -- peanut butter mousse, homemade jam and brittle all under a "blanket" of chocolate. Or take a Roll in the Sack -- an apple cinnamon Swiss roll in a phyllo sack with vanilla ice cream. If you're looking for an intimate dinner-in-B.E.D. experience, however, beware that B.E.D doubles as a techno-throbbing, scenery night spot for those who prefer to watch while others eat.
Romantic Restaurants
Miami Beach is famous for having the most Romantic Restaurants. So, if you just want to take a very special person to a nice place and at the same time be blocks away from your own home, Flamingo South Beach is the place to be. Or you and your significant other will always feel in love just by being surrounded by this beautiful place. Here are a few of the Romantic Restaurants in your area.
The Forge
432 41st Street
Miami Beach, FL 33140
(305) 538-8533
Elegant, lavish, yet refined; this celebrity hot spot is the quintessence of delicious proximity.
The Forge embraces all that is romantic, elegant, lavish and refined. Known for its 'Super Steak' and immense wine list, The Forge is deemed by locals as the ultimate upscale location to have an extraordinary evening. Dark wood and stained-glass motifs make it a complete escape from the typical cyber-mod South Beach scene. Here everything is grand, from the wine list to the cuisine, which focuses on steak but also offers selections like lamb, buffalo and venison, as well as seafood options like stone crabs, jumbo shrimp and lobster. You can also choose from fresh fish, roasted duck and chicken.
Wednesday nights are unique club-esque evenings when South Beach's most prominent and hip arrive for drinks or dinner, so it's an ideal time to spot glamorous faces. The Forge has been a well-known name in fine dining, attracting some of the most sought-after celebrities, such as Lenny Kravitz, Michael Douglas and Michael Jordan. But unlike the here-today, gone-tomorrow hot spots, it has maintained its reputation for excellence.
Miami's Best Sushi
Sushi Samba Dromo
600 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 673-5337
Just like it looked on 'Sex and the City', Sushi Samba Dromo is a glamorous, jet set-geared sushi powerhouse with the electricity of Brazil and the coolness of Japan. Be adventurous -- most all types of Technicolor sushi at this hybrid eatery are a safe bet, and, not only that, you can go anywhere for plain ol' sushi. Try the delicious tasting salmon service with Dijon mustard, miso and yellowtail tiradito, luscious slices of cured fish anointed with truffle oil and sea salt. Crispy oysters are fabulous with shiitake puree and wasabi tobiko. For meat lovers, there's churrasco with your choice of meats.
Then there are always the candy-colored, flavored cocktails that accessorize the outfits of the chic elite hanging here. A loud soundtrack of lounge and dance music makes for a party atmosphere, or outdoor seating on Lincoln Road gives you a chance to scope the Manolo Blahnik-heeled fashionistas that come traipsing through.
Miami Beach Seafood
Joe's Stone Crabs
11 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 673-0365
A legendary institution that is the last word when it comes to eating delicious crabs in Miami.
No Miami dining experience is complete without the requisite visit to Joe's Stone Crab, an old-school seafood restaurant that has practically monopolized the stone-crab market by reeling in the biggest and best of this South Florida delicacy. There's only one thing to know before going: Joe's accepts no reservations, so you'll likely wait for a table upwards of three hours, unless you grease the palms of the Sopranos-esque hosts with some stone cold cash. Because Joe's is only open from October to May, it's a pricey, hot-ticket restaurant. Once you've scored that highly coveted table, feast on the house specialty -- stone crabs (choose medium, 'select,' or large) and select a delicious side dish such as garlic-creamed spinach or homemade home fries.
When not in a crabby mood, other dinner options like coconut shrimp and certified Angus steaks are equally satisfying. Each year, the quality and breadth of the wine list grows under chef Andre Bienvenu's supervision, but no meal at Joe's is complete without a slice of the famous key lime pie. After waiting hours to eat here, you might as well reward yourself.
Pacific Time
915 Lincoln Road
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 534-5979
When Pacific Time opened in 1993, Lincoln Road was a decrepit, desolate block of nothingness. Chef Jonathan Eismann didn't care. He knew it was time to set a trend of excellence and spark a culinary renaissance where location was secondary to the food. Since Pacific Time opened, countless trendy restaurants have come and gone on the revamped Lincoln Road, but this spot manages to stay in synch, thanks to its exquisite Pan-Asian cuisine that fuses Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Mongolian and Indonesian flavors unlike anywhere else in the area.
The Szechuan grilled mahi mahi, served on a bed of shredded shallots and ginger with a sweet sake-infused sauce and tempura-dunked sweet potato slivers, puts local Chinese take out to shame. With a frequently changing menu, Pacific Time keeps everything fresh and innovative, turning local ingredients and catches of the day into dishes that keep diners coming back. Although folks can be fickle about trends, this still trendy restaurant has become a timeless favorite for foodies and hipsters alike.
A Fish Called Avalon
700 Ocean Drive, The Avalon Hotel
The Avalon Hotel
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 532-1727
At A Fish Called Avalon, the seafood is so fresh it seems caught right outside the front door -- which faces the Atlantic Ocean. Known as a South Beach mainstay, this restaurant has prime seating on a patio with a view of the city's most popular street. In addition, the personnel are reliable and food is delicious. That combination is rare indeed. Though they specialize in seafood, the choice of dishes spans the globe, addressing the cuisines of France, Japan and the Caribbean. Avalon does, however, demonstrate a sense of tradition. It serves oysters that are top-notch but that hail from... Alabama.
Music and Nightlife
Miami Beach is a lot of fun at night. Many of these places are within walking distance from Flamingo South Beach. Come and join us and let's have some fun while you meet your neighbors.
Here are a few of the places our existing residents are already visiting:
Crobar
1445 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 531-5027
One of the few pure dance clubs left in a city where minimalist lounges and hotel bars reign supreme, Crobar is consistently on the itinerary of local A-listers, celebrities and dance freaks, thanks to its fantastic, superior sound system, stellar roster of DJs, and VIP allure. Among those who have boogied at crobar are Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Justin and Kelly from American Idol, Vin Diesel, Lenny Kravitz and, well, you get the picture.
Still known for its somewhat oppressive velvet-rope policy, Crobar manages to keep the VIPs away from the hoi polloi thanks to a not-so-secret upstairs VIP Lounge, but from time to time the Celebes mix into the crowd downstairs on the dance floor, where high energy is a priority over celebrity sighting.
Delano Hotel Pool Bar
1685 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(800) 555-5001
It's exactly the kind of South Beach image visitors love to take away with them: the long walk past billowy white drapes and dimly lit, off-center modern furniture before emerging into the sunlight to see a serene infinity pool flanked by rows of white chaises, with white-clad cabana attendants flitting about discreetly. But the defining image of this pool is one that shifts it from the beautiful into the surreal -- a single table, chair and candelabrum are set adrift in the shallow end of the pool, available for use by whoever can get to it first. By day, George Clooney, P. Diddy and such have been known to lounge about here. On weekend evenings, a DJ plays old-school dance music for a well-dressed, coifed and mannered crowd. There's a kind of desultory concession to the idea of the velvet rope, with a guard sometimes hovering outside the pool area, but the fact is that anyone, hotel guest or not, is free to walk in.
Jazid
1342 Washington Avenue
Miami Beach, FL 33139
(305) 673-9372
You may feel like you've just entered a New Orleans jazz club when you step inside this friendly two-story hangout. The romantic candlelit tables and wooden framed pictures give the impression of a cozy evening at a close friend's home. You are likely to hear an Ella Fitzgerald-like vocalist performing with a band on the tiny stage in the corner. The club touts its "Live music every damn night" slogan, which is a rare treat in this DJ/trance dance neighborhood. The live music is always rhythm and blues, jazz or Motown. Redesigned by the team of Patrick Kennedy Inc., Jazid successfully accommodates two distinctive scenes in its 5,000-square-foot space. While the lower half is warm, dark and jazzy, the upstairs is oh-so-mod and space-age cool. This second-floor area is a great place to chill with friends or strike up a game of pool. A retro blue-and-green glow is cast around the lounge/dance area, and a DJ spins original, laid-back grooves. Trippy blue and green glob images are projected on suspended, curvy white cutouts. Jazid is widely known for its original drink recipes created by the club's "mixologist." The drinks are made from fresh fruits and often garnished with edible flowers. Sample exotic blends like apple and banana martinis or the notorious Ruby, as seen on 'Sex and the City.
